If you ever decided to watch an expert in action, you might find his game rather unimpressive. This would be largely because most players have a false idea that the expert game abounds in squeezes, coups, endplays and other exotic maneuvers. The fact is that the expert's chief stock in trade is his ability to reason well and make as few mistakes in judgment as is humanly possible. He doesn't beat the opponents nearly as often as he lets them beat themselves. Once in a while! he does come forth with a startling bid play that seems to hint at supernatural power, but, even then, when this bid or play is analyzed, it will generally be found that there was little more than plain common sense behind it.

Here is a case where an expert East found a sensational but sound play that defeated three notrump. South had chosen this contract, despite the singleton club, because he thought nine tricks would be easier to make than eleven. Declarer won the spade lead with the queen and returned the king of diamonds. East ducked, but won the continuation with the ace on which West discarded a low heart. East thereupon returned the king of clubs! Declarer could do nothing to combat this extraordinary play.

He later tried a heart finesse and went down two. Had East 1 returned a spade or a low club, South would have scored at least nine tricks. East had noted partner's singleton diamond and also his lead of the spade deuce, showing a -card suit. As it seemed highly likely that West would have led from a five-card suit if he had one, East deduced that his partner had 4-4-4-1 distribution and that declarer hence had a singleton club. By B.
