Of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes' "three generations of imbeciles" in Buck v. Bell, 1927, the second did well in school and the third made the honor roll. Because of the High Court's judicial blindness, over 60,000 U.S. citizens were sterilized into the 1970s, simply for being poor, colored, belonging to the wrong family, or for getting caught masturbating. Hitler used that Decision to start the Holocaust, and it has never been overturned. It informs mental health law and court procedure to this day, allowing, as it did in 1927, people to be summarily and permanently stripped of civil rights, even on the basis of fourth-hand hearsay. It makes for a grim, grim read.

Vocal groups, armed with terms like "gender ideology" and "gender indoctrination," emerge to challenge progressive initiatives. This book unveils their mobilization strategies and examines their impact on policy changes. This analysis explores the swift mobilization of anti-gender groups through social media channels, where daily texts and messages not only target gender equality and LGBTIQ rights but also human rights activists and civil society organizations. The objective is not to expose or ridicule these groups, but rather to gain understanding and knowledge. By unraveling the motivations and tactics of anti-gender movements, this book seeks to promote human rights for all and counter hegemonic framing strategies. Through a meticulous examination of 269 pieces from various social network sources, such as anti-gender mobilization Facebook pages and groups, "Who is Afraid of Gender?" sheds light on the complexities of this societal clash. This insightful exploration empowers advocates for gender equality, providing valuable insights to strengthen their mobilization efforts. 'Satan Has Come to Rietfontein': Race in South Africa's Satanic Panic

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, as the apartheid system was falling apart, white South Africa was gripped by a powerful moral panic that played out, often hysterically, in the newspapers and magazines of the time. This Satanism scare revolved around fears of a large-scale conspiracy of evil that mostly involved white youth, and that threatened the spiritual health and even the continued existence of white South Africa. Rape, murder, cannibalism and all manner of atrocities involving virgins, animals and babies were commonly said to be part of Satanist rituals occurring across the country. Satanists, South Africans were told, were everywhere, and were as great a threat to their nation as communists. This article uses contemporary press material to examine three isolated yet related incidents within the scare: the Orso murder trial in 1992, when a teenager and her boyfriend claimed satanic possession as the motivation for the murder of her mother; the case of the ‘Rietfontein slasher’, also in 1992, when a group of white schoolgirls was apparently tormented by a supernatural force; and a single article about the alleged possession of a large number of black students in a school in the Atteridgeville township in 1989. It uses these three episodes to reveal how the Satanism scare was violently racialised, how the possibility of magic was both legally and culturally reserved for whites and how many white South Africans’ literal fear of the Devil fed into recurrent discursive narratives about black pathology and white responsibility.
