pray that you will print this letter as this problem has plagued my friends and me for many years I'm a 19 year old girl living with my parents and attending a very strict Baptist college My parents are paying for my education Abby I've been listening to rock music for over eight years without my knowledge They found the tapes and were crushed They say they can no longer trust me I apologized for having kept it from them but explained that 1 didn't tell them because I knew rock music is against their beliefs They say that rock music destroys young people and that I cannot keep the tapes in the house 1 told them that I have developed my own convictions and as long as 1 disturb anyone with my music I should be allowed to keep the tapes and listen to them Who is right? Must I get rid of the tapes and turn my radio dial to the religious station? Or should I be allowed to make my own choice of music as long as I don't bother anybody? ME IN SOUTH CAROLINA DEAR ME: As long as you live in your home and they are paying for your education you must follow their rules Once you are on your own you may do as you please DEAR ABBY: I live in Pearl City Hawaii and I'm shocked and appalled at the ignorance of some of our fellow Americans who still think Hawaii is a coun try" When 1 travel to the mainland 1 am amazed at the number of people who say love to go to Hawaii someday I've never been out of the United States" I'm also asked this your first trip to America?" Dear Abby I 1 by Abigail Van Duren 1 even been asked you have running water being that you're so isolated from everything? And how does life in America compare to Hawaii?" The list goes on and on Will you please inform people that Hawaii is now one of the 50 states of the union? Also we no longer live in little grass shacks Thank You! ALIVE AND WELL IN AMERICA DEAR ALIVE: You can bet your ukulele Let it be known that on Aug 21 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state to join the union and has been a part of America ever since! DEAR ABBY: With the changing times (and less emphasis on the more formal aspects of a wedding) my wife and 1 are often faced with an embarrassing dilemma We are both pastors who officiate at many weddings We are seldom invited in advance to the rehearsal dinner or the wedding reception but when we start to leave the bride says stay We thought you knew you were invited" We never presume that we are invited unless we have received an invitation before hand Abby we have small children and must make arrangements for having them looked after just as all the other invited guests who have been of ficially invited Please remind your readers that if the officiating pastor (s) is ex pected to stay for the rehearsal dinner and reception an invitation should be sent ASSOCIATE PASTORS IN ILLINOIS DEAR PASTORS: Consider it done CONIDENTIAL TO A CONVICTED ELON WHO HAS SERVED HIS TIME IN CALIORNIA: You may vote if your offense did not relate to any violation of the voting laws and you are not on parole Before registering you will be asked: 1 Are you 18 years old or over? 2 Are you an American citizen? 3 Have you lived in the county 29 days before the election you want to vote in? 4 Are you on parole for a felony? WHITE broadcloth thrown in with red cor duroy is going to come out of the dryer as pink broadcloth Black linen washed with terry (any color) will break out in little curley thread ends When washing your fabric it is not necessary to give it the full treat ment Put it in warm water on a delicate cycle with just a tad of detergent Use a short wash two or three minutes should do it When drying fabric throw in an old terry towel to help "fluff" it up Why old? No chance of curley qs or color fade If the fabric needs Luncheon Held The Elderberrie meeting was held on Sept 16 1980 in ellowship Hall of Trinity Church United Methodist at noon Carry in Luncheon" was enjoyed Margaret Steven asked the blessing It was a time for rejoicing good food and people to enjoy it The tables were decorated with yellow Chrysanthemus The serving committee was Margaret Steven lorence Giese and Ruth Becker Birthdays honored with a sweet gift were Severa Diekvoss Gertrude Buschkoff Leona Berent Ermma Heideman and Alva Steiner a new Chns Behm Shower Held The home of Kathie Zuehlke 817 North Street Beaver Dam was the scene of a miscellaneous bridal shower for Chris Behm Hostesses were Chris' aunts Jane Sherman Kathie Zuehlke and Joan Daniels As the guests arrived placed their gifts on an appropriately decorated table highlighted by bridal cakes made by Linda Washtock sister of the bride to be Games were played and prizes awarded after which a luncheon was served Chris will become the bride of Bill Korallis on Sept 19 1980 at St Catholic Church Beaver Dam member 1 hey were saluted with a Happy Birthday song Members were glad to see Esther Hartl with us again after a pro illness Slides were shown by the Rev and Mrs Messer schmidt who had made a trip to Austria The next meeting will be Oct 14 Everyone over 50 years is welcome to these meetings College Students MADISON Wis Debra Jean Linde of Beaver Dam has been appointed to the position of student supervisor in the student residence halls at the University of Wisconsin Madison for the 1980 81 academic year She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Rodney Linde and is a senior at the University majoring in ood Science As a Student Supervisor Linde will have responsibility for scheduling training and directing the work of 120 students in Gordon Dining Room Loyal Hearts Set Meeting The Loyal Hearts Group will meet at Rosemary McDermott's home 104 McKinley St Beaver Dam on Monday at 7:30 pm Laura Volkman will be the co hostess pressing use a warm steam iron and press gently with the grain If the fabric was "off grain" before washing it may need a little straightening at the ironing board Some knits of course do not need pressing but they should be allowed to rest awhile before being cut Lay fabric on cutting board (do not allow any of it to hang over edge) and leave it alone while you make the beds or wash the dishes Give it time to return to its original state If this suggestion makes you giggle just think how little you will giggle if your finished knit garment is too small!
