Was a Confederate Soldier And Very Interesting Character

Rev. Frank N. Bell, of Canton, died in Nashville a few days ago, wherehe
had been confined in an asylum for several months. Rev. Bellwas a most
interesting character and was well known in this city. He wasa native of
Virginia and served in the Confederate army during the Civil war.He was
about 75 years old.

WAS TRIGG COUNTY RESIDENT FOR MANY YEARS, FUNERAL TUESDAY
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 for Mrs. GrantBruce at
the East End Cemetery and were conducted by Rev. Luther Sanders.Mrs. Bruce
succumbed June 20 at the Western State Hospital, Hopkinsville.Mrs. Bruce
was taken from her husband and children nineteen years ago to becomean
inmate at Western State. She had been in fair health until abouta month
ago when she began being much disabled. She had been in the sickward for
about 3 weeks. The deceased was 69 years of age and was the daughterof
late Greenberry and Rebecca Wolfe. She came to Lyon county, Kentuckyat the
age of 14. IN 1892 she was united in marriage to Grant Bruceof Lyon
county. She moved to Trigg county in 1903 and resided here until1924. She
made many friends wherever she lived and her entire time was spentwith the
work that she could do for her family, her community. She wasa member of
Peal's Chapel Methodist Church. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bruceis survived
by the following children, Otho Bruce, Princeton, Leon Bruce, Cadiz,Mrs.
Delphys Coyle, Bellevue, Mich; Ewin Bruce, Battle Creek, Mich; AbreR.
Bruce, Ogen Utah and Mrs. Edward Jones, Evansville, Ind. Fifteen
grandchildren also survive.

Suicide at the Asylum

A suicide occurred at the Western Asylum yesterday morning, WilliamC.
Clark, a patient from Penrod in Muhlenberg county, tore his sheet into
strips and hanged himself to a ventilator in the wall of his room,after
having tied his feet together. When found he was dead.The Coroner held an
inquest yesterday and the verdict exonerated the authorities from blamein
the matter. Clark was a preacher and was 60 years old.He had been in the
Asylum 11 years. He leaves no family.

Choked to Death
Asylum Patient Expires Suddenly While At Dinner Table
W.T. Clark, an asylum patient, choked to death Saturday, while at thedinner
table. He had been subject to paralysis of the muscles of thethroat for
some time and this frequently interfered greatly with the taking ofmeals.
On Saturday he sat down to the table as usual and as soon as he commenced
eating paralysis set up and he choked to death in a few seconds.He was
received at the asylum from Livingston county in August last for treatment.
He leaves a family of grown children. The remains were shipped to hishome
Sunday and the interment took place yesterday.

"Uncle Bob Tank" Cunningham Died Monday in Hopkinsville of Complicationof
Troubles
Mr. Robert Cunningham "Uncle Bob Tank," as he was affectionately calledby
his many friends, died Monday night at the Western Kentucky Hospitalin
Hopkinsville where he had been for several weeks.

For some time he had been a sufferer from kidney trouble and other
complications which caused his death.

Mr. Cunningham was born in Trigg county and had spent his life in the
county, being past eighty-four years of age. He was a son ofMickens
Cunningham, and was one of eleven children, all of whom are now deadexcept
one sister, Mrs. M. A. Hendrick, of the Mershon bridge country.

The wife, formerly Miss Ellen Cameron and to whom he was married whena
young man, has been dead for a number of years, and the following children
survive: Josh Cunningham, and Mrs. Kate McCage, of Calloway county;Mrs. A.
C. Crisp, of Marshall county; Mrs. J. W. Cunningham, of Morehouse,Mo; Mrs.
Bailey Mize, of Canton, and Mrs. Lucien Franklin, of Clarksville.

He had been a member of the Baptist church since young manhood.Few men in
the county were better known or had more friends than "Uncle Bob Tank"He
had a sunny disposition, was a good story teller, and always delightedin
the company of friends.

The remains were brought back to Trigg county Tuesday and taken to theMrs.
M. A. Hendrick grave yard near Mershon bridge, where they were buried,
Tuesday afternoon and a large number of relatives and friends werepresent
pay a last tribute of respect to one whom they all lived.

An Aged Minister, Dies at the Asylum
Rev. W.W. Duncan, an aged and well know Presbyterian minister, diedat the
Asylum Tuesday night. While out walking a few weeks ago he felland injured
one of his hips. In a few days he was attacked with pneumoniaand passed
away as stated. He was a native of Hanco*ck county and had beenengaged in
ministerial work for many years. He was sent to the asylum abouteight
months ago and was 80 years old. Funeral services were conductedat the
Ninth street Presbyterian church by Dr. W.L. Nourse yesterday morningand
the interment took place in Hopewell.

Causes Sudden Death of a Patient at Asylum
John Flowers, an asylum inmate died at the institution Sunday morningof cerebral hemorrhage. He was about 65 years old and a native of McCrackencounty. He was placed in the asylum for treatment a few months ago forthe fifth time, and the illness that caused his death was only of a fewdays duration. He was a man of family and his wife arrived here Saturdayand was at his bedside when he died. The remains were shipped to Paducahyesterday morning and the interment took place in the cemetery of thatcity in the afternoon.

Miss Futrell, of near Roaring Spring, died at the asylum Wednesdayof heart
trouble. She was 27 years old and sent here for treatment fromTrigg county
about two years ago. She had previously been in the institution,but was
send home as cured and then returned to the asylum. The bodywas taken to
Trigg county yesterday and interred in the family burying ground.

Last Thursday night Virgil Grimes, a middle aged man, hung himselfnear his
home in the vicinity of Richelieu. The suicide had been in badhealth for
some time, and has been in the asylum at Hopkinsville. Saturdaynight he
became very violent, and his wife went to a neighbors to get assistance.
While she was gone he left the house and was not found till about nineo'
clock Sunday morning, when he was found dead. There was a cutin his neck
whether made by the rope with which he hung himself or whether he attempted
to cut his throat, we are not informed. He was of a respectablefamily and
has several children.

Mrs. J. A. Hoops, a patient from Beaver Dam, died at the Asylum Tuesdayof Pneumonia. She was 30 years old and had been in the Asylum but a shortwhile. Her husband came to the city and took the remains of his wife toBeaver Dam for interment.

The body of a white man was found in a straw stack on the farm of W.G.P'POOL at Bainbridge, Christian Co, KY about three miles from CeruleanSprings, last Friday morning. The man had been in the neighborhood lateTuesday preceding, and on the day had talked with C.J. MOSELEY to whomhe gave his name as MILLER and claimed to be from Graves county.
This was the last seen of him until the body was found. The matterwas reported to Coroner Allensworth of Christian County being that theman came to his death by freezing.
The body was taken to Hopkinsville Monday by Mr P'Pool and was identifiedby Mr FENTRESS, of the Western Kentucky Asylum for the Insane, as beingthat of Elbert MILLER a patient from Wingo, Graves County.
Miller had been in the asylum for some time and was considered a "trusty".On New Year's day he was sent to the spring for a bucket of water, andfailing to return within a reasonable time search was made for him, buthe was not located. His bucket was found setting beside the spring. Thebody was delivered to the asylum officials and will be disposed of as relativesdirect.

The Remains of Mrs J.W. O'Bryan Brought Here and Interred InCity Cemetery

The remains of Mrs J.W. O'Bryan whose death occurred at the Hopkinsvilleasylum last Thursday evening were brought here Friday afternoon and interredin the City Cemetery. Mrs O'Bryan was formerly Miss Anna Lee Blanton, daughterof the late E. Lee Blanton, and was one of Princeton's brightest youngladies. After the death of her father she went to Dawson to live with heruncle. On February 26 1890, she was married in this city at the SouthernPresbyterian church to J. W. O'Bryan of Dawson. Two children, a girl andboy were born unto them. Their home was bright and cheerful, and happinessreigned until the young wife's mind became impaired. The funeral took placefrom the Southern Presbyterian church, Friday afternoon and was conductedby Rev. R.W. Morehead and Rev. V.P. Merritt.

MARY A. PURCHASE

Mary A. Purchase was born January 1830, in England, the only daughterof Joseph and Mary A. Purchase. She had four brothers:George, Edward, Joseph and Sidney. The family left England after1845, and had arrived in McCracken County, KY before the 1850 Census.The father and brothers were farmers near Paducah. Mary never married.On the 1870 Census she was living with her widowed mother and youngestbrother Sidney.

Mary was committed to the Western Lunatic Asylum in 1879, at theage of 49, when her mother, who was 76, had probably become too infirmto continue caring for her. The 1880 Census notes Mary as Insane.Mary remained at the Asylum for 41 years until her death in 1920.Mary outlived all her brothers

Mary’s Death Certificate, number 493, states that she died ofheart failure at age 87, on January 30, 1920, as a patient of Western StateHospital. It states that she had been ill for 6 months prior to herdeath. In the fields for birthplace, parent’s names and birthplacesand occupation, the hospital has written “No Records”. Shewas buried at WSH February 2, 1920.

business in Cadiz several years ago, died last week at the asylum in
Hopkinsville. She was sixty nine years of age and had been apatient at the

Linnie Shepherd
Cleaveland "Linnie" Shepherd was born April6, 1899, in Carlilse County, KY. He was the son of Thomas David Shepherdand Louellen "Ella" Burrow. Linnie had 2 siblings, a brother whodied at the age of 3, and a baby who died an infant. Linnie's father,a farmer, died of a heart attack as he sought shelter from a thunderstormwhen Linnie was 18 years old. Linnie's mother died when he was 32.Linnie never married.
According to his Death Certificate, Linniewas admitted to Western State Hospital April 16, 1842. He remaineda patient for 24 years until his death there, from pneumonia and heartdisease, on October 27, 1966.
Linnie had several cousins living in CarlisleCounty at the time of his death. They brought his body home for burialwith his parents in the Shepherd family plot of Zoar Cemetery. Linnie'sobituary did not mention that he had been a patient at Western State Hospital.

Mr. Linnie Shepherd, age 67, a resident of the ZoarChurch community, died at 12:25 a.m. October 27. He was a memberof the Zoar Baptist Church. Survived by a cousin, Mrs .Zula Cullenof Bardwell, and a number of other cousins and relatives. Funeralservices were held at the Zoar Baptist Church on October 29, at 2:30 p.m.with the Rev. Roy Clark and Rev. R. W. Wooley in charge. Burial wasin the church cemetery. Pallbearers were G. Terry, Lucian Holman,Cletus Harper, Verl Puckett, Clair Harper and Jim Holt. Roy M. LoweFuneral Home in charge.
Note: Linnie's only maternal uncle, RobertBurrow, was a patient at Western State Hospital for 43 years until hisdeath in 1937. Linnie's cousin by marriage, Victoria Grubbs, diedat Western State Hospital in 1918.

Mrs. Henry Sholar Dies In Hopkinsville
Splendid Trigg County Lady Passed Away At The Age Of Seventy Five
Mrs. Helen Sholar, a splendid Trigg county lady and wife of the lateDrew
Sholar, died last Monday at the Western State Hospital in Hopkinsville,
where she had been for some weeks for treatment.

She had long lived in the Maggie section, eight miles south of Cadizand was
a lady held in high esteem and had many friends.

She was a Miss Wile? Before marriage and was born in 1849, being seventy
five years of age at the time of her death.

The remains were brought to Cadiz and buried Tuesday afternoon at EastEnd
Cemetery, short funeral services being held at the grave.

The surviving children are: Mrs. Thomas A. Hamilton, of Hopkinsville;Jimmie
Sholar, of Todd county, and Tom D.; Joe and Albert Sholar and Mrs.Garnett
Carloss, of Trigg county.

Mrs. Sholar was a Methodist in religion and had for many years beena member
of Oakland church.

Prominent Trigg Countian Dies in Hopkinsville
Mr. Ottoway Tart, a prominent citizen of Trigg county who had beenan inmate
of the Western State Hospital at Hopkinsville for perhaps a coupleof years,
died at the institution Tuesday night. He was about seventy-fouryeas of
age. The remains will be brought to Trigg county and buried todayat the
Humphries grave yard in Montgomery section.

Otaway Tart
The remains of Mr. Otaway Tart. Brief mention of whose deathat the Western
State Hospital on the night of May 3rd was made in THE RECORD lastweek,
were brought to Trigg county last Thursday and buried in the Humphriesgrave
yard five miles east of Cadiz. A large number of friends andrelatives were
present, and funeral services were held at the grave, conducted byMr.
Waller, the undertaker, of Hopkinsville. A number of old timesongs, in the
singing of which the deceased so much delighted in years past, weresung by
friends at the funeral and burial.

Otaway Tart was born in Trigg county October 17, 1844, and was a sonof
Lodowick and Susan Humphries Tart. He was one of a family ofseven
children, all now being dead except the youngest brother, John W. Tart,of
this county. All of his life had been spent in this county withthe
exception of ten years spent in Texas when a younger man. Formany years
Mr. Tart engaged in teaching and had taught in many sections of thecounty.
He united with the Christian church at Concord, Christian county, whena
young man and for many years before his death had held his membershipwith
the Christian church at Cadiz. He was never married.

MARY ANN (POLLY) LYLES THOMASSON
A letter addressed to Symsonia, Graves County, KY, to the family ofPolly A.Thomasson, from Western State Hospital, and dated April 12, 1926,certified that Mrs. Polly A. Thomasson was admitted to the hospital, fromGraves County, on December 15, 1897, by Caswell Thomasson (contact on record).It stated that the records further showed that she died in the hospitalon December 18, 1899 of heart disease. The letter also explainedthat she had been buried in the unclaimed body section of the City Cemeteryand that her wooden marker had later been burned by fire. The letter wassigned by A. S. Keefe, MD and Assistant Superintendent.

Mrs. Polly A. Thomasson was born Mary Ann Lyles about 1845/46 in GravesCounty, KY. She was the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary J. ElmoreLyles. In 1858, at the age of 13, she was married to William CaswellThomasson. Polly Ann had 5 sons and 3 daughters. She lived most ofher life in Symsonia, Graves County, KY. Polly Ann's husband remarriedin 1903, and died in Graves County, January 1, 1926.

JACK WEST

Jack West, African Amercian, date of birth November 28, 1875, Inmate#2386 was committed to the Kentucky prison system on April 1, 1916. Hereceived a life sentence from the Christian Circuit Court on the chargeof Willful Murder. He was released by parole on July 12, 1924 and returnedto prison as a parole violator on February 12, 1925. On November 26, 1925he was transferred to the Western State Hospital and never returned tothe prison system. On September 6, 1963, Jack West died after 37 years,9 months, and 10 days in the Western State Hospital. This information wasobtained from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Department of Corrections,Offender Information Services Department on October 29, 2003.

Jack West died from Myocardial Degeneration and Generalized Arteriosclerosis.He was buried in West Union Cemetery on September 10, 1963. His parentswere Paul West and Mary Baker. This information is from his death certificate,file number 116 and Registrar's number 518.

Fastened Suspenders Around His Neck, Then Swung Off William Wilson,an asylum patient, committed suicide by hanging, Tuesday afternoon.He entered a closet connected with his ward, and stepping upon the topof a bath tub tied a piece of sheeting around the water pipe in the topof the closet. He then fastened one end of his suspenders aroundhis neck and the other to the sheeting and swung off. He was missedfrom the ward in a few minutes and a search was immediately made, but whenhe was found life was extinct. Wilson was about 20 years old andwas sent to the institution from Adairville, Logan county, four monthsago. Coroner Allensworth held an inquest and the verdict was "suicide"by strangulation.
